Jaisalmer Fort, locally recognized as Sonar Quila is added up as one of the major forts in the world located in Jaisalmer City. This was assembled in 1156 AD by Bhati Rajput leader Rao Jaisal to where the name belongs. Originally the entire population of Jaisalmer existed within the fort and today the old fort still holds an occupant population of about 4000 people who are mostly of Brahmin and Rajput communities. It is one of the scarce ‘living forts’ in the world.
Gadisar Lake used to be a water preservation container built in 1400 AD and was raised under the province of Maharwal Gadsi Singh. Enjoy bird watching on the bank of Gadisar Lake. There is a doorway made of yellow brickworks branded as ‘Tilon Ki Pol’. A Krishna temple is also found by the side of the arcade. A curious fact about it is that this never dehydrates as it gets a nonstop water supply from the Indira Gandhi Canal. Do have a boat ride on this lake. This is also home to numerous variants of craftsmen as well.
Because of the brocade trading reputation, Patwa Haveli, also known as ‘Mansion of Brocade merchants’ is very famous in the golden city Jaisalmer. This is an exciting slice of design. This is somewhat because of two things- firstly it is not a solitary haveli but a bunch of five minor Havelis. All these five houses took a span of 50 years to be completed. This is the biggest haveli in Jaisalmer and stands on a thin path. This haveli is currently engaged by the Government. The office of Archeological Survey of India and State Art and Craft department are found in the haveli itself.
Moti Mahal is positioned beside the hills near the Jaisalmer fort constructed by Salim Singh in the 17th Century. He pointed out many complicated designs in the stone work and even displayed some of the oil lamps with flames that would have been used at the time. Take a walk from Jaisalmer fort as it is near to the fort. Visitors come here for its brilliant structural design and mostly balconies. The rooftop has been created in the shape of a peacock. It has tuskers guarding the accesses. These are finished with sandstones and the appearance is very close to the original in look.
Lastly, let’s go to the Thar Heritage Museum. This is famed for covering the objects that were discovered during the diggings like coins, tools, portraits, toys, etc. This museum displays the erratic snaps and pictures of the majestic folks of Jaisalmer. Its outdated role is to collect stuff and materials of social, spiritual and historic importance, then realm them to the public for the perseverance of learning and gratification. It houses things shaped by flora and fauna and by man and in our modern society, it houses the folk passion of the nation.
